CHARACTERS IN-GAME: Wataru Hibiki, Gaku Yaotome, Dice Arisugawa

CHARACTER
NAME: Osamu Dazai
CANON: Bungou to Alchemist
CANON POINT: Co-Research with Chief Librarian ~Part Fifteen~
AGE: 39 (at time of death)
BACKGROUND: Please refer to the Main Story for an overview of how the whole shebang works with transmigrating (essentially summoning) authors and a look at the world itself. Dazai will most importantly have memories of the recollection (event) Purify "The Setting Sun" (where he remembered the circumstances around his suicide), as well as the memories brought about by his having his Ring (Memories of Bliss, i.e. his happiest memories from life, of his friends, etc). All the Recollections he features in are conveniently linked here. For a glimpse at the man as he originally lived, take a gander at the Trivia section of his wiki page! These help contextualize his relationships with others in the game, but aren't all necessarily relevant to the current Dazai.

PERSONALITY:
The game itself describes Dazai in various ways, some of which are wildly unflattering... But considering what kind of person he was while alive, it's no surprise that many of his traits skew toward the negative. Dazai, in life, was a narcissist who would stop at nothing to be recognized as the unique, incredible person he viewed himself to be. In Bungou to Alchemist, the reincarnated Dazai is often little better. While he doesn't retain all of the negativity of his life, he holds on to a lot of the bad habits.

In life hailing from the Decadent School of Japanese literature (alongside his dear pal Oda and the eccentric Ango), the man is self-indulgent and extravagant, determined to walk his own path. Dazai is stated by his comrades to be the person who most strictly adhered to the tenets of his literary school in life, throwing up the proverbial middle finger to his several of his contemporary authors and living a life by his own terms as much as possible. Some of his self-indulgence is also in the form of enjoying being flashy and fashionable, and in being utterly particular about the company he keeps. He'll flee a situation he doesn't like without question, will duck responsibility, and will heavily criticize others he disagrees with... where they can't hear it, of course. He's a coward to their face, preferring to avoid conflict by running away instead of facing people in person and confronting them (especially people he didn't get along with in life). Those who he dislikes, he's often scathing about behind their backs. Still, he's effusive with praise for those who mentored him, or whose work he reveres. He's particularly enamored with Ibuse and Akutagawa, who he will namedrop at every opportunity. It's no surprise, as Ibuse was his mentor and Akutagawa was a giant of literature with a prestigious prize named after him... And it's equally unsurprising that Dazai wanted that award more than literally anything else. He gets childishly excited and starstruck whenever he's around Akutagawa, and it wouldn't be far off to think of his attention to Akutagawa as a bit... much. Maybe creepy. Who's judging, though?

Even now, he's a stubborn, melodramatic guy, but his core is one of insecurity and fear. He's a worrier, the sort to fret over things like confrontation or not being appreciated--even not being super fashionable sets him off. Sensitive and almost childlike in his fears and moods, the way he sees himself is rarely how others see him. He'll be the first to build himself up, but any defeat or disagreement is met with despondency of the highest degree. It's probably not surprising coming from a guy who tried to kill himself five times. Dazai loathes not being seen as unique and special, and wants all the attention and accolades he can get by virtue of what he sees as his own genius.

At the same time, he's apologetic about who he was in life--even calling himself shameful--and the memories of his life aren't fully returned to him. He recognizes that he was often troublesome, even if he doesn't actually change much or do anything about it most of the time. There are a precious few people he disagreed with in life who, in the Library, he has sought out through letters and interactions, trying to come to terms with the disagreements that caused him the deepest despair. Satou Haruo is a particular example: he had begged the man in life to see to it that he won the Akutagawa Prize, but it didn't happen, and this led to Dazai's eventual suicide. However, in the Library, he has reached out to his fellow author in an attempt to express remorse for how he reacted in life, and to try to bridge the gap it caused between them. Other things have also changed for the better, including him trying a little harder to rely on the people around him--seen largely through the heartfelt and enthusiastic support Oda always shows him. In the Recollection Purify "The Setting Sun", Oda goes out of his way to draw people to Dazai's aid, and encourages him wholeheartedly. This, eventually soothes Dazai, who often feels isolated (even if it's his own fault and a by-product of wanting to be seen as special and above others... yeah).

Dazai may always think himself above others, but one can always hope that the little sensible glimmers seen in his new circumstances will cause him to be more suitably bold, realistically goal-minded, and easier to get along with. But, then again, he's someone who builds himself up so much in his own head that he can't help but be disappointed with how the rest of the world sees him. A coward, a fretting mess, someone who strikes out vowing to be different to the point of superiority, but... at least here and there, he's tried to diverge from his tragic path in life, and will be a staple in the Library for a long time to come.

POWERS/ABILITIES: Authors in Bungou to Alchemist heal via ink, so he can't be healed by conventional means. They also have the ability to Book Delve: to enter the world inside books and fight any Taints/baddies that might be there.

Dazai's other abilities are mostly tied to the weapons he can use/summon. He has stats, but they aren't important for the way he'll be played here. The only thing that's important about his stats is that he's one of the authors categorized as "unstable" which means his special attacks are easier to trigger than those of many others (they're triggered by injury accumulation). It's just a stronger physical attack, in the case of Prisma, and it allows him to partner attack! His weapons are a scythe (blade class) and, with the aid of a special Ring, a bow. Please note the acquisition of the ring also triggers the writer to regain more old memories, so he will have this ring with him in Prisma for the sake of completeness.

He also gets stronger when heavily injured, but it's a dangerous state and he's completely mentally unstable then. It's more of a desperation, last-ditch kind of attack.

INVENTORY: The book that turns into his scythe and bow, the Ring that allows him to use/summon the bow, some ink, and one whole onigiri.
